More Admin Changes
Alyse on 12 Jun 2006 09:11 pm (7 Comments)

Unfortunately, due to other commitments, we've lost two more admins. I'd like to thank Rivensky and Janissa for their efforts on the archive over the last two years. Their hard work has been much appreciated.

We're in the process of trying to decide how to deal with the admin side of the archive at the moment, now that we're down to three archivists, but in the interim we'd like to welcome Leah to the fold. Leah will be helping out on CSI: Miami and is familiar with both the rules and the operation of the archive, as she actually runs another archive with me, Wraithbait, for Stargate: Atlantis. We're very grateful to her for giving us a hand.

We hope to have more news for you shortly, but please bear with us through any delays in validating.

Thank you.

Plagiarism
Trina on 03 Apr 2006 06:48 pm (13 Comments)

Today I removed the account chocolateaddict from the site for plagiarism. The three stories that this author submitted for publication on our site were stolen word-for-word from other authors.

As is clearly stated in the rules, this site has a zero tolerance policy for plagiarism, and any instances of plagiarism proved to our satisfaction will result in not only the story being removed from the site, but the author's account being deleted and a similar statement to name and shame the author to this one being made on the front page.

Admin Changes
Alyse on 19 Feb 2006 07:14 pm (10 Comments)

Due to real life commitments, unfortunately Clara has had to scale back her involvement in the archive. This left us two archivists down, so we're very pleased to be able to welcome Emony and Trina to archiving duties.

Emony will be taking over responsibility for all CSI: NY categories and Trina will be taking over responsibility for CSI: Ship. Current responsibilities are therefore:

Alyse: CSI: Gen, CSI: Threesomes and Moresomes, CSI: Cross Genre, Crossovers - all categories

Emony: CSI: NY

Janissa: CSI: Slash

Rivensky: CSI: Miami

Trina (cherryicee): CSI: Ship

Today I've also added a number of pairing sub-categories to the CSI: NY - Ship and Slash categories as we've finally got enough stories to justify that change. So far the only categories submitted are those that have had stories submitted. We'll add other categories as necessary.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Anon Reviews turned off...

...since we have an illiterate moron who thinks it's funny to flame authors.

Although I will admit that the fact that his flames are more poorly worded than any of the stories he's denounced as 'shity' is immensely amusing.

Quoting of copyrighted works
Alyse on 10 Jan 2006 09:11 pm (7 Comments)

As some of you may be already aware, some large fanfiction archives no longer accept songfics. Our understanding is that this is largely due to fanfiction sites having received C&D letters concerning stories that quote extensively from song lyrics, infringing upon copyright held by someone else. In some countries, solicitors do not even need to be instructed to send C&D letters to copyright infringers, and it has become a rather lucrative business for some to identify sites that infringe upon music copyright and serve C&D letters to them.

As an archive, we understand that the works we host are derivative and may infringe upon copyrights that are held by others. This is a risk that we have accepted. Most TV and Movie copyright holders are aware that fanfiction is not for profit and is written from love of the show rather than a desire to infringe on something to which they hold the rights. We are not, however, prepared to accept the risk that comes with authors quoting directly and extensively from copyrighted works, with or without disclaimers in place. Such quotage is in direct competition with the copyright holder's ability to sell song sheets, etc, and may be perceived as a threat to their income, with predictable results.

We don't, however, want to follow other sites in banning songfics completely. In fact, we haven't to date included anything in the rules about songfics at all, trusting to the judgement of our authors on what is, or is not, 'fair use' of lyrics (i.e. permitted quoting without infringing on copyright). Unfortunately, we have had a number of submissions recently:

- that have quoted most or all of the lyrics of a particular song

- where a large percentage of the story - in some cases more than half of the content - are actually directly quoted song lyrics written by someone else and are not the fanfiction author's own work.

In these cases we have had no choice but to reject these stories as it falls well outside our understanding of fair use, and we will continue to do so.

Could I therefore please ask all of our authors to be more careful about the stories that they submit and ensure that:

- the quoting of song lyrics is kept to a minimum. Consider them the fanfiction equivalent of hot chilli powder and use sparingly :)

- the vast majority of the story should be in the author's own words (and this would include not submitting stories that consist largely or significantly of dialogue from the shows themselves rather than the fanfiction author's own words).

Thank you.

Attention AOL Users
Alyse on 09 Jan 2006 01:21 pm (10 Comments)

Can you ensure that you check your spam boxes for mails from this site, and ensure that mails from this site are whitelisted, please?

We've had some issues with authors not receiving mails, including rejection letters, because AOL had misidentified them as spam.

Thank you.

Plagiarism
Alyse on 05 Jan 2006 11:36 am (10 Comments)

Today I removed an account from the site - HotChick739 - for plagiarism. The two stories that this author archived with us were stolen from other authors on the site. The author, after receiving comments on one - Stalker, which was, apparently, taken from Ravenheart's story of the same name - removed it, but she failed to remove the other story - King Baby Aftermath - from the site, and we were therefore able to verify that it was a word for word copy of Drumchik's story, Behind the Conversation.

As is clearly stated in the rules, this site has a zero tolerance policy for plagiarism, and any instances of plagiarism proved to our satisfaction will result in not only the story being removed from the site, but the author's account being deleted and a similar statement to name and shame the author to this one being made on the front page.

Story submissions turned back on
Alyse on 28 Dec 2005 05:32 pm (10 Comments)

Story submissions have been turned back on, although not all of the admins have returned from holiday. We would therefore be grateful for your patience, as there may be delays in validating stories in certain categories.

Thank you.

Story submissions turned off
Alyse on 20 Dec 2005 11:07 pm (13 Comments)

As most of the admins will be away over Christmas and won't be around to validate stories, I've turned story submissions off temporarily. This means that you won't be able to add new stories or chapters until it is turned back on again around 29th or so.

There are some stories in the queue, but they will be cleared in the next day or so.

Happy Holidays!

Hack attempt
Alyse on 04 Dec 2005 08:08 pm (8 Comments)

Someone has attempted to hack this site, and most of the other sites that I run using eFiction. As far as I can tell, they haven't managed to change anything, but can you let me know if you're experiencing any problems with your account etc. please? In the meantime, I've applied a fix and changed all of the admin passwords etc., and I suggest that you change your password too if you have any concerns.

Responsibilities change
Alyse on 03 Dec 2005 11:48 am (7 Comments)

Unfortunately, Ash can no longer help out with the archive due to real life commitments. We are very grateful for the help and support that she's given us since the archive first opened over a year ago.

We have therefore had a little rejig of the responsibilities of the archivists, with the result that archivists have been assigned the following categories:

Alyse: CSI: General; CSI: Threesomes, Moresomes and Cross Genre; CSI: NY - General, Ship, Threesomes etc.; Crossovers - General, Ship, Threesomes etc.

Clara: CSI: Ship

Janissa: Slash - CSI, CSI: NY and Crossovers

Rivensky: CSI: Miami - all categories

Please direct any questions to the appropriate archivist or to Alyse, who oversees the archive as a whole.

Server move completed
Alyse on 07 Oct 2005 11:05 am (10 Comments)

The server move has now been completed, and problems regarding viewing stories appear to have been sorted out.

Consequently, I've turned story submissions on again.

View Unanswered Reviews
Alyse on 25 Sep 2005 08:20 am (12 Comments)

If you have an account here, next time you log in you should notice a new link under 'Your Account' - 'View Unanswered Reviews'. Clicking on that link lets you see any reviews left on your stories to which you haven't replied. And to make it even more helpful, at the end of each unanswered review is a text link saying 'Respond'. Clicking on that will take you to the normal response box so that you can reply to the review if you wish.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Revised Help Page
Alyse on 18 Jul 2005 06:47 pm (8 Comments)

I've expanded the help page to include information on what constitutes underage relationship stories - which we will not accept - as well as one or two other hopefully helpful hints.

Series/Sequels
Clara on 22 Apr 2005 11:38 pm (15 Comments)

Recently we've noticed a number of sequels to previously posted fics are being posted separately.

It would save us a lot of time and trouble if authors could read rule # 6 which states all sequels/fics in a series should not be filed as separate stories but as separate chapters within one 'story'

Stories failing to comply will not be validated until fixed by the author, thus drawing out the validation process.

Thank you!

New Archivist
Alyse on 10 Apr 2005 06:28 pm (7 Comments)

We'd like to welcome RivenSky to the archiving team. She will be covering the CSI: Miami categories.

The new responsibilities therefore are as follows:

CSI General - Clara

CSI Ship - Ash

CSI, CSI:NY and Crossovers Slash - Janissa

CSI Miami (all categories) - RivenSky

Remaining Categories - Alyse

Ratings
Alyse on 20 Aug 2004 12:37 pm (5 Comments)

We've noted some instances of authors rating different parts of the same story as different ratings. While in principle we have no objection to this, the first part of any story or series should always be rated at the appropriate level for the story/series overall, as it's this rating that shows up in the author and story menus.

Please ensure that you do this before submitting. Thank you.

If you're having problems receiving your password once you've registered, please contact one of the Admins, preferably me. Some ISPs have spam filters that unfortunately mistakenly identify the mails with your passwords as spam and eat them.

There is a work around, but it involves me generating a password for you and mailing it to myself, and then forwarding it on to you.

Also, please be aware that user names and passwords are case sensitive.
