I crouched down next to my son. He had been beaten viciously by a group of men out for revenge aginst him, revenge for having put one of them away for murder. They had jumped him, savagely beaten him to near unconciousness, and left him for dead.
And dead he would be if help didn't arrive quickly; the beating had left him with internal injuries and my son wasn't ready to join me yet. He still had much to do.
"Anna," a male voice said. I looked up; it was Saint Michael, one of God's main angels and a good, kind angel with a commanding prescence.
"Michael," I said, acknowledging him.
Michael studied my son, who coughed through fractured ribs. "He must live, Anna. Though he does not know it, God has plans for him," he said. I nodded. "You must help him, Anna, but by staying within the Rules. The rest is up to you." I nodded again. Michael smiled warmly and said, "Go with God."
"And you, Michael," I replied. And with that, he was gone.
I had an idea as to how to help my son and, at the same time, introduce him to someone special. "Hang on, son. I'll be right back," I whispered.
And my son, Lieutenant Horatio Caine of the Miami-Dale Crime Lab, struggled to survive.
Summary: Horatio lost his mother many years ago and, on occassion, he misses her. What he doesn't know is that she has always been there.
